Hey guys, A lot of you know me, a lot of you don't. My name is Julie Fidler and I'm one of Shaunti's project specialists. I'm also the moderator on the forums on Shaunti.com.
I'm writing an article for a magazine called Living With Teenagers and I could really use your input.
What can parents do to make their home teen-friendly? Do you have a friend whose house you love to hang out at because it's such a cool atmosphere? I want to hear about it. Tell me your stories and give suggestions. You can either post here or email me at julie.fidler@live.com
Thanks, guys! Julie

| I rarely invite my own friends over...I have too many siblings and they follow us around everywhere!LOL and my mom used to treat my best friend like a daughter and now she doesn't like her for numerous small reasons. So I just go to her house. Her parents ask where we will be when we will be home and if there's anything they can do and then give us space! I love it! For some reason when a parent isn't always nagging and over your shoulder it's easier to do what they want. My friend and I will make supper for her mom or do the dishes because she doesn't tell us to 50 times. She might ask once if we can help her and that's it....IDK I guess if you have a friend over it's more fun if the parents let you have a little space!! |

| I know this topic is kind of old, but recently I've noticed something that I'm not sure a lot of parents understand. My parents are great and we are not sheltered, but I know a lot of parents who are overprotective of their kids and they act like they can protect them from all of these horrible things that happen out in the world. What they don't seem to understand is that these things have often happened to us, a friend of ours or at least nearly happened. What we need (and I'm blessed that my parents get this) is for them to empower us to be strong enough to deal with it, not if, but when it happens, physically and mentally. We need a place where it's okay to come home and tell them what happened- I know there are things I just pretend don't happen, because I'm going along with my parents assumption that it never could. Family karate classes and my parents saying "It's okay," things like that. |
